Background of the Study

The availability of essential medicines is a critical determinant of the effectiveness of healthcare systems. Supply chain management (SCM) plays a vital role in ensuring that medicines are procured, stored, and distributed efficiently to meet the needs of the population. In Kwara State, challenges such as stockouts, wastage, and delays in delivery have hindered access to essential medicines, particularly in rural areas (Olawale & Musa, 2025).

Effective SCM involves coordinated activities such as forecasting, inventory management, procurement, and distribution. However, systemic inefficiencies, poor infrastructure, and inadequate funding have undermined these processes in Kwara State. This study evaluates the current state of SCM for essential medicines, identifying gaps and recommending strategies for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

The supply chain management of essential medicines in Kwara State is fraught with inefficiencies that compromise healthcare delivery. Frequent stockouts, poor inventory management, and delays in distribution disrupt the availability of life-saving medicines, particularly in primary healthcare facilities.

Despite efforts to strengthen SCM through policy interventions and partnerships, the problem persists due to systemic challenges such as inadequate funding, corruption, and lack of skilled personnel. This study examines these issues to propose actionable solutions for improving SCM in Kwara State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current state of supply chain management for essential medicines in Kwara State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of SCM inefficiencies on the availability of essential medicines.
  3. To identify strategies for strengthening SCM processes in Kwara State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current state of supply chain management for essential medicines in Kwara State?
  2. How do SCM inefficiencies affect the availability of essential medicines in Kwara State?
  3. What strategies can improve SCM processes for essential medicines?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The supply chain management of essential medicines in Kwara State is inefficient.
  2. SCM inefficiencies significantly affect the availability of essential medicines.
  3. Strengthening inventory management and distribution processes will improve SCM efficiency.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the SCM of essential medicines in public healthcare facilities in Kwara State, with emphasis on procurement, inventory management, and distribution processes. Limitations include potential data inaccuracies and variability in SCM practices across facilities.

Definitions of Terms
